Universities of the World: Northwestern

Business Initiative Directions

Northwestern University is a private research university located in Evanston, Illinois. The University also has a campus in Chicago, Illinois (where its professional schools and related hospitals are located) and a satellite campus in Education City, Doha, Qatar, where it operates a school of journalism and communication.

The university was founded by 9 methodists in 1850, and granted charter in 1851 by the Illinois General Assembly, making it the oldest chartered university in the state of Illinois.

In 1855, when raising funds to begin construction on the first buildings in Evanston, Northwestern sold “perpetual scholarships” that entitled the purchaser and his heirs to free tuition, for only $100! Talk about a good investment, especially considering that undergraduate tuition for the 2012-2013 school year is estimated to be $61,240.

The amazing thing is that these perpetual scholarships are still honored to this day, if you are lucky enough to have an ancestor who bought one.

Today, the university offers offers 124 undergraduate majors and 145 graduate and professional degrees. It is currently ranked 27th in the QS world university-rankings. Northwestern is currently educating an enrollment of 8,425 undergraduates and 10,759 post-graduate students.

Northwestern’s School of Communication is renowned the world over. Its programs in drama, film, television, and its Medill School of Journalism has produced many notable actors, writers, journalists and political activists (including 38 Pulitzer Prize laureates). The University has also produced an inordinate amount of people appearing on ESPN.
